Coexistent Heteroblastic Needles of Adult Pinus canariensis C.Sm. ex DC. in Buch Trees Differ Structurally and Physiologically

چکیده

Great variation in shape and size between primary (juvenile) secondary (adult) needles, so-called leaf-heteroblasty, occurs several Pinus species. Most of them loss needles during the juvenile-to-adult transition tree. An exception to this is canariensis (a Canary Islands endemism) which basal resprouting twigs adult trees frequently wear both needles. Taking advantage extraordinary study-case-species, we conducted an exhaustive comparison needle types through quantitative analyses anatomy, photochemical performance, gas exchange, resistance extreme dehydration temperature. We hypothesized that would show lower investment leaf structure but higher photosynthetical efficiency. Primary had less stomatal density thicker wettable cuticles. In cross section, showed smaller structural fraction (e.g., percent hypodermis, endodermis vascular tissue) photosynthetic parenchyma. Significant differences were not found net carbon assimilation their mass area values. Interestingly, electron transport rate, they additionally much more efficient retaining water under severe controlled desiccant conditions. When subjected temperatures (?10° +50 °C), recovered better efficiency than after +46° +48 °C heat-shock treatments. Our results indicate broaden diversity physiological responses against environmental constrains P. trees. Considering a fire-resistant species, could be particularly useful drastic change such fire or gap opening forest.

Treatments on the Survival of Pinus canariensis Chr. Sm. Ex DC in Buch Planted Seedlings in Arid Zones (Herbivore Protectors-Fertilizers-Mulch- Hydrogels)

A study was designed to provide information about the best plantation techniques for Pinus canariensis in the southern part of Tenerife, at the old pine forest location (precipitation <250mm and 12oC mean annual temperature). Two study sites were selected (Fasnia and Arico); in each site two plots of 5 ha were established. In total, 4 plots were located and in each plot, 32 subplots of 16 x 16 ...

Germination of Terminalia Sericea Buch. Ex Dc Seeds: the Effects of Temperature Regime, Photoperiod, Gibberellic Acid and Potassium Nitrate

In an effort to improve and promote the propagation of Terminalia sericea, the effects of temperature, photoperiod and growth regulators on seed germination were investigated. Seeds were tested with different temperature regime (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40C) and in photoperiod (4/20, 8/16, 12/12, 16/8 light/dark hrs and 24 hours continuous dark). Pre-treatments with growth regulators were don...

Hydroalcoholic extract of needles of Pinus eldarica enhances pentobarbital-induced sleep: possible involvement of GABAergic system

Objective: Insomnia is accompanied by several health complications and the currently used soporific drugs can induce several side effects such as psychomotor impairment, amnesia, and tolerance. The present study was planned to investigate the sleep prolonging effect of Pinus eldarica. Materials and Methods: Hydroalcoholic extract (HAE) of P. eldarica, its water fraction (WF), ethyl acetate frac...

Vulnerability to cavitation, hydraulic efficiency, growth and survival in an insular pine (Pinus canariensis).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is widely accepted that hydraulic failure due to xylem embolism is a key factor contributing to drought-induced mortality in trees. In the present study, an attempt is made to disentangle phenotypic plasticity from genetic variation in hydraulic traits across the entire distribution area of a tree species to detect adaptation to local environments. METHODS A series of t...

Needles of Pinus halepensis as Biomonitors of Bioaerosol Emissions

We propose using the surface of pine trees needles to biomonitor the bioaerosol emissions at a composting plant. Measurements were based on 16S rRNA gene copy numbers of Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, a bioindicator of composting plant emissions. A sampling plan was established based on 29 samples around the emission source. The abundance of 16S rRNA gene copies of S. rectivirgula per gram of ...
